How to do Tayrona Park differently

Want to go to Tayrona Park, but don’t want to sleep in a hammock? Stuck with a big rucksack, too?

What should you do?

Cabo San Juan is the most popular place to stay in Tayrona Park. Home to the famous hammocks, it is beautiful – but there are a few restrictions:

  • It’s touristy so you need to get there early to bank a hammock
  • There are only hammocks – not the most comfortable, and this is coming from a 5″2 girl, so good luck to all those 6″ chaps out there
  • It’s pretty much impossible to get there carrying a big rucksack, as it involves a 3 hour walk through narrow trees. So you’d need to leave it somewhere. Most people leave it in Santa Marta, but it’s a bit of a faff & could be unnecessary.
I came across Manigua Tayrona Park by complete accident – but so glad I did.

Located just outside Tayrona Park, this is a small guesthouse run by a super kind Colombian family, who went out of their way to make our stay as special as possible.

We came across it by chance, as we were frantically trying to work out what to do with all our stuff.

Everything about it was seamless.

They picked us up from Costeno beach in their 4×4, were immediately greeted with lulo fruit juice & cervezas , went for a dip in the pool, and then fell asleep in the biggest, most comfortable hammocks. We woke up to wafts of the amazing home-cooked stew that was being cooked by the family chef, for all the guests.

Alejandra (one of the owners) even booked our tickets for the park, so we didn’t have to queue the following day.

We left early in the morning, having checked out but leaving our bags there, for the park. The hike really is beautiful, through the jungly trees & along the beach – it’s like something I’d never done before.

And afterwards, we went back to Manigua to get our bags, before heading on to Minca.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
